Elan Valley, near Rhayader
Famous for its six dams and Victorian architecture, Elan Valley covers an area of 72 sqm with a visitor centre and gift shop. Pen-y-Garreg Dam tours are only available to the public on selected open days throughout the year, but your clients can arrange a private, fascinating ‘behind the scenes’ tour. It's the only Victorian dam in the UK where visitors can go inside. The impressive architectural 123 foot high, 528 feet long dam was built in 1903 by Engineer Eustace Tickell. The tunnel accessed by steps is lit by apertures in the downstream side of the dam, and leads to the central tower. Spectacular views of the dam wall and the valley below can be seen once on the central platform. Private ranger tours of the estate are also offered where a ranger joins the passengers on their coach/minibus and talks about the Elan Valley Estate whilst visiting the six dams.
